The love of homeownership…

March 3, 2009 by admin

It’s raining BUCKETS…more than cats and dogs. Came home today around 4:30 and heard a noise as I walked in the door. I thought “what the fuck?”

I walked into the dining room and saw that my entire kitchen floor was flooded and that water was POURING down from the CEILING.

 I totally freaked out.

I only had a half ladder and couldn’t get onto the roof from the back deck, I quickly called a friend and asked if she had a long ladder, she didn’t I hung up.  I ran to several neighbors’ homes, either no one was home or they didn’t have a long ladder.

I ran back into the house, threw all of my towels down on the kitchen floor and thought “OHMYGAWD…the downstairs unit! What if it’s soaked because of all the water on the kitchen floor!”

I quickly got the half ladder, ripped open the bedroom window and climbed out onto the garage roof. I called my son to hold the ladder steady, and I climbed up and hoisted myself onto the roof. When I made it over my feet immediately hit the water and then approached my shins. HOLY SHIT. I slid across the side of the roof because I was afraid that if I walked in the middle it would cave in with my weight and the water weight.

I found the drain and it was clogged with 3 of my son’s frickin tennis balls!  I unlodged the balls and the water let loose into a torrential waterfall, really like the raging waters when you go white water rafting. I climbed down the ladder, flung the ladder back through the window and quickly called the tenant. I  let her know what was happening and asked if it was okay if I went into her unit. She said of course and then said, “Oh by the way did the other tenant mention that the kitchen window leaks?” I wanted to cry. I hung up, went down stairs with the torrential water fall still coming down (10 minutes later!) checked on the unit, nothing major just water on the  floor entrance because of the water fall from the top deck to the bottom area near her door. Can you fucking believe it? I am so tired of taking care of household shit that I’m getting more and more into the grove of becoming an out of area, out of state, investor and rent where I really want to live.

How nice it would have been to just call up the landlord and have them set the date for the roofers and pay the tab. The life of an investor/homeowner…

Some days it feels like buying property means keeping  your wallet open.
